The Roman Camp Inn
The Roman Camp Inn is a traditional rural Inn with a friendly atmosphere.
Whether you come to us overnight on business, or for a relaxing North Norfolk holiday you’ll find the essentials generously taken care of at this delightfully hospitable small Inn.
We want our guests to unwind, explore the beautiful countryside and have a happy and memorable stay. Our all day restaurant offers quality home cooked food made with locally sourced ingredients, and our traditional panelled bar, has served real local ale since 1894, and offers a fabulous range of drinks and selection of nice wine. In the winter months you can enjoy our lounge area by the fire sitting in a comfortable armchair, in the summer move outside to our patios and soak up the tranquillity of our traditional English gardens.
The Inn has been designed to be relaxing with a number of unusual features – locally commissioned leaded glass and sculpture, panelled lounge and bar, Latin inscriptions and pictures relating to local history.
Guests have the option of 15 en-suite rooms consisting of five traditional rooms and ten standard rooms, including a family suite with 2 connecting rooms and 2 large accessible rooms both with en-suite wet rooms. The restaurant, bar and gardens are all accessible to wheelchair users including those travelling independently. For those guests enjoying the local National Cycling Network, or Rebellion Way, we have secure cycle storage on site.
There is ample free parking to the front and rear of the Inn.
We have an all-day conservatory restaurant and bar serving quality food, made with locally sourced ingredients and using herbs from our well stocked garden. Our bar has served real, local ale since first licensed in 1894, and retains a traditional country charm. The romantically planted gardens, with roses and lavender, offer tranquillity, just perfect for a relaxing meal or drink whilst soaking in the great outdoors.
Location
Aylmerton is set in an area of outstanding Natural beauty in the heart of North Norfolk. Although this area is called Roman Camp, in fact, brown ironstone and slag found here date back to Saxon and medieval times. The site has been used from the earliest days as a coastal warning point as the area called the Runtons was considered one of the most dangerous places on the Norfolk coast for pirates and invaders.
We are situated between Sheringham and Cromer, standing close to the highest point in Norfolk, with the beautiful Coastline just to the North, the National trust estate Felbrigg within easy walking distance to the east, and some of the County’s most attractive countryside surrounding it. Cyclists can enjoy easy access to National Cycle Networks Route 30 and the Rebellion Way.
Walkers will enjoy exploring the wonderful woods of Felbrigg and Sheringham Park, the heaths at Kelling and Salthouse, the Norfolk Coastal Path, Weavers Way and Peddars Way – why not check out www.walkcromer.co.uk for more details.
A short drive away are the traditional market towns of Holt and Aylsham, the country estates of Blickling Hall, Wolterton Hall and Mannington Hall, the marshes, alive with birds, at Cley and Blakeney. The Broads and their waterways are within easy reach.
If it’s a round of golf you’re after then Sheringham, West Runton, Mundesley and Cromer are all in easy reach and have well renowned courses.
Good food is a core ingredient of the Roman Camp Inn.
We offer a locally sourced seasonal menu.
